Millars Landing, Baldivis, WA

Millars Landing is a new estate located just 45min south of Perth in Baldivis, Western Australia. The recently opened Millars Landing Park features a climbing tower with slide, rock climbing wall, flying fox, musical instruments, BBQ areas & a huge train structure that kids can climb and explore. Tim Pedersen, WA Business Development Manager for Grillex was engaged by the City of Rockingham to provide the street and park furniture, bin enclosures & bike racks at the development's feature playground.

Millars Landing sits just South of the old Rockingham-Jarrahdale train line, which was constructed in 1871 and owned by Millars Timbers and Trading Co. The line connected the Jarrahdale timber mills to the Rockingham port, where the timber was shipped all over the world, including London, Glasgow and Paris where it was used as street paving blocks.

This historical link to the regions timber industry, is why Grillex recommend the use of an Eco 5000 timber for the construction of the outdoor furniture component of this project.

An eco-friendly timber product, Eco 5000 is an engineered modern-day timber made from trees that have been cultivated for their latex. Using environmentally friendly methods, the timber by-product is recycled to produce a sustainable, high quality timber that is safe, robust and surpasses all major parameters with regards to structural integrity, stability, durability & pest infestations.

"Eco 5000 doesn't warp, is gun barrel straight and with no tannin stain means the timber doesn't bleed, making it an ideal alternative to solid timber for the park furniture at Millars Landing Park" Tim Pedersen of Grillex says.

Grillex bin enclosures had to be built tough and easy to clean to withstand many a spilt ice-cream sundae and soft drink. Grillex manufactured & constructed the bin enclosures at Millars Landing park from a TimberImage aluminium extrusion. "The laminated extrusion means we can achieve a timber-look without the maintenance so that all councils have to do is clean them with a high-pressure hose, otherwise they're maintenance free" Tim says.

The tramway reserve, that runs along the entire Millars Landing estate, was created in the early 1920's as the backbone of a temporary rail network built to transport harvested local timbers for use in furniture, building and railway construction out of the region; and the transport of construction and farming materials into the region.

It's fitting then that the central theme of the Millars Landing playground throws back to this railway heritage, featuring a locomotive train. There are also some totally awesome train-themed play structures and lots of great activities for the kids.

Everyone knows that bike parking is a must in any good playground and Grillex used a 316 Stainless steel narrow hoop bike rack to compliment the modern park design and to provide safety as well as durability.

The Millars Landing playground is a great place to take family and friends and perfectly combines the old-world feel and rustic elements of trains & timber alongside contemporary playground design and functionality.

"We really enjoyed working with Rockingham Council on this project and seeing it all come together" Tim says "It's really set a benchmark for other playgrounds popping up all over South East WA"
